Residence Housing Rooms and Amenities

Although the individual rooms at Vassar seem almost as diverse as the student body, the following descriptions are helpful.

Room Types

One Room Double
A single room shared by two students. Some of these rooms have accordion style room dividers for added privacy.
Quads
Generally one to three rooms shared by four students.
Suite
Generally has three rooms (sometimes four), two of which are joined by a doorway and one of which is separate. All the rooms open into a common living room that is shared. This option is available for students who wish to live in a coeducational environment within a shared space. Aside from apartment housing, this is the only option for coeducational shared space living.
One Room Triple
A single room shared by three students.
Two Room Triples
Consist of a single room off of a one room double.
Two Room Doubles
Consist of a single room off of another single room.
Singles
A solo room--a high proportion of rooms are singles. These are not usually available for freshmen.

Standard Furnishings

Students are provided with a dresser, a desk, a chair, a bed frame, a mattress, a wardrobe, computer/ phone jack, and a recycling and trash bin. Each room also comes with overhead lighting and at least one window with a screen and a shade. We strongly recommend that you bring desk lamps, as the overhead lights do not provide enough light for reading.

House Amenities

Each house is equipped with:

  • Washers and dryers located in the basement
In Main, they are located on the third floor and the south wing of the second floor.
  • Coed bathrooms
  • A computer cluster
  • Vending machines
  • An ice machine
  • Public pay phones and hall phones

Students also have access to brooms, dust pans, mops, vacuum cleaners, pots, and pans. These items can be located near the Multi-purpose rooms (MPRs) in each house.

All houses have a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a parlor:

  • The multipurpose rooms are equipped with cable television, a DVD/VCR, a pool table, and sometimes a ping pong table.
  • The kitchens are full size with a stove, refrigerator, microwave oven, dishwasher, and sink.
  • The parlors are formal rooms which are used for events and social gatherings. Each parlor is equipped with a Steinway piano.
